My serve was obviously not as good as theirs since I'd never done it before but as far as tapping the ball back over and keeping it in, that's not very tough. The guy couldn't believe some of the balls I was getting to and able to get back over. I got down early and then almost came back. When challenged he wouldn't play me in singles. Despite never playing before I held my own but lost some close ones. So I ended up playing with him and his buddies. I was better than all the beginners because I play tennis. 1st time a coworker of mine who wouldn't shut up about it had me come to one of his beginner training sessions. The serve alone is extremely hard along with proper forehand. At the end of the day its about capturing more clients. It also doesn't surprise me that business owners would convert existing courts to pickleball courts. It definitely doesn't surprise me, that it is a huge growing sport.because it doesn't have a high skill ceiling/barrier for entry. Tennis is the type of sport where you need to dedicate a good 3 practice a week to maintain fitness/groundstrokers, while pickleball is a hobby where you can play occasionally with groups of friends and chat.Īnyone can pick up a pickleball paddle and have a good time. The amount of time and effort needed to get good- along with overall fitness is tremendously high. Tennis is a great sport, but not inclusive. I knew about pickleball a long time ago because it became hugely popular at a community a relative lived at in CA. It doesn't seem to hold their attention as long. For the latter group, there's more of a chance it'll burn out. I feel very it appeals to younger people because it's like taking tennis and turning it into something less challenging like a silly app game that basically requires little investment or skill. It obviously appeals to the older players because of the court size, equipment, and pace of play. I understand it's revenue for racquet sport businesses. Simply the skill level and easy access to equipment let it thrive. A lot of 20 somethings who like to giggle and call out the score seem to be around. ![]() As far as I see, it's not just older people playing. As others note, it's constant crack-crack. It was like an apex in its prevalence but really we're not there yet. It has been shown on CBS News Sunday Morning, on CBS Sports Spectacular last Sunday, had articles in major newspapers, and shown on TC in just the last two weeks. Tape was going down and not being removed in places. Tennis courts had been removed and then they put in pickleball courts. ![]() I came back to the forum to look around because of this fairly sudden pop in pickleball affecting tennis.
