His emotions reach a tipping point when at the Battle of Balaclava, a Russian raiding party captures an improperly defended British fortification, carrying away several pieces of artillery. Duberly.Ĭaptain Nolan has been growing increasingly exasperated at the ineptitude of Raglan and the other officers, which has caused needless death and delay at every step. As the war progresses Lord Cardigan retires nightly to the yacht he keeps on the coastline to hold formal dinners, at one of which he seduces Mrs. Back in England the press lies that the city is captured and Russia's government humbled. As a result, the Russians reinforce the road to Sebastopol, necessitating a series of further battles before the British even reach the city. When the outbreak passes, British and French forces win at Alma, but Lord Raglan refuses to allow the cavalry to press the advantage, so concerned is he with keeping the cavalry as an undamaged reserve. Captain Nolan, although no friend of his subordinates, is frightened to see the army's organisation fall apart as men are consumed by the disease. Along the way the British forces are ravaged by cholera, an occurrence met with palpable indifference by their commanders. Also travelling with the British command is the 8th Hussars' paymaster's wife named Fanny Duberly ( Jill Bennett), who wants to observe battle first-hand (and be near Lord Cardigan, with whom she is infatuated).īritain and its ally France travel to the Crimea, where they march inland to attack the strategically important city of Sevastopol. Captain Nolan, enlisted as Raglan's aide, is glad to get away from Britain it gives him an escape from the morally uneasy affair he has been having with Clarissa Morris ( Vanessa Redgrave), the wife of his best friend William ( Mark Burns). As campaign preparations begin he is preoccupied with a bad mistake he made while allotting commands, requiring Lord Cardigan to lead the Light Cavalry Brigade under his equally unpleasant arch-rival and brother-in-law Lord Lucan ( Harry Andrews), who has been appointed to command the Cavalry Division. Despite having been a disciple of the recently deceased Duke of Wellington for decades, he has not his military flair. Nolan soon gets into a highly publicised feud with Cardigan, who is angry at him for ordering Moselle wine at a banquet where all guests were to drink champagne.īritish forces are led by Lord Raglan ( John Gielgud), a Waterloo veteran and an amiable, vague-minded man who proves a poor commander. They endure squalid living conditions and are punished mercilessly for the slightest missteps in their duties. Cardigan's men are typical of the common soldiers of their day though reasonably well-equipped – compared with the Russians – they are also poorly trained and supplied. Nolan's superior is the gruff Lord Cardigan ( Trevor Howard), who treats the regiment under his command as his personal property and who dislikes Nolan as an "Indian" officer with a native Indian servant. As such he regards many of his colleagues, who are mostly aristocratic dilettantes casual about squandering their subordinates' lives, with contempt. A veteran of the British Indian Army, Nolan is unusual in the hierarchy of his day both for having combat experience and for having acquired his commission through merited promotion as opposed to purchase. The anti-hero is a relatively competent officer, Captain Louis Nolan ( David Hemmings). Tactical and logistical methodology had not advanced in forty years, and the whole ethos of the army was bound in outmoded social values. Britain had not fought in a European theatre since the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, and the army had become sclerotic and bound by bureaucracy. The film is about the folly of war, and the poor state of the British Army and its leadership during the Crimean War (1853–1856). This film features Richardson's daughters Natasha and Joely in their debuts. Its animated credits and linking passages were created by Richard Williams, drawing on the satirical use of Victorian-era jingoistic images. It was directed by Tony Richardson and produced by Neil Hartley. The Charge of the Light Brigade is a 1968 British DeLuxe Color satirical war film made by Woodfall Film Productions and distributed by United Artists, depicting parts of the Crimean War and the eponymous charge. $1 million (US/ Canada rental) $3.2 million (total)

Don’t ever use one of those sponge-dipper glass rimmers, either. I’m not a huge fan of the traditional sugar rim either, so a good compromise to satisfy every guest is to sugar only half the rim. Gaz Regan is quick to point out that you will have to adjust the proportion and balance of the ingredients depending on which Cognac you use Courvoisier does not give you the same Sidecar as Hennessy does! Experiment! It’s fun! It was goo-ooo-ood.Ĭombine with cracked ice in a cocktail shaker and shake for However, Christy and Chad, as well as several of the other bartenders present, favor a 3:2:1 proportion, which oddly enough is the proportion I’d been using for my Margaritas but not my Sidecars. That’d be 2 ounces Cognac, 1 Cointreau and 1/2 lemon. Try it and see what you think.įor a while I started making them in the “classic” proportion of 4:2:1 (which is incidentally a good starting-off point if you’re trying to create a new drink with spirit, liqueur and citrus you can vary from there as you need, and add seasoning via dashes of this and that). Later on the proportions evolved to 2 parts brandy and 1 each of triple sec and lemon juice, which some people still favor but others find too tart. Try a small one, with 1/2 ounce of each ingredient - I suspect you’ll agree. Perhaps it’s just that tastes have changed, but in this proportion I place this into a category of drinks I call “Not Very Good.” Not bad, just undistinguished. The original proportion, as it was made in France during its beginnings, were equal proportions of brandy, triple sec and lemon juice. We like it.Īnd whoever did it … it’s not an entirely original concept, having descended from the Crusta, and being in a category of drinks Gary Regan calls “New Orleans Sours ” i.e., spirit, orange liqueur, citrus. David Embury, author of The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, gives credit to an American officer in Paris who asked a bartender for a kind of brandy sour and named it after the side car of his motorcycle. As with many cocktails there are myriad stories as to its origin Harry MacElhone, in his classic work Harry’s ABC of Mixing Cocktails, cites a bartender from London by the name of Pat MacGarry. One classic that emerged from that period, and is perhaps the best-known brandy cocktail today, despite its relative obscurity with the general drinking public, is the Sidecar, which emerged around the end of World War I. While the cocktail can be called America’s first great contribution to the culinary arts, the Europeans finally started to catch up in the early 20th Century. I learned a bit more about this drink during Chad Solomon and Christy Pope’s brandy seminar in Los Angeles in 2007, sponsored by Hennessy Cognac, during the part where they were tracing the development of cocktails in Europe. Give it a try this fall and let me know what you think.I have René Engel to thank for getting me to like these, back in the late ’90s. I’m confident you’ll find that this Apple Cider Sidecar is a cocktail to savor. Want more fall cocktail recipes? You’ll love these too: With drinks poured, all that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy. (My cocktail shaker is from there as well.) Talk about the perfect Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving cocktail, right?įor serving, I used these beautiful gold rimmed coupe glasses I picked up at Crate & Barrel. I think this cocktail deserves something luxe and special. I highly recommend these (though they are a tad more expensive) or a brandied cherry rather than the more common bright red maraschino cherries. I also used Luxardo Orginal Maraschino Cherries. To make my garnish, I used a peeler to get a nice-size lemon peel. Fresh apple cider, bourbon (I used Hennessy.), Cointreau, and a splash of lemon juice get added to a cocktail shaker with ice.Īfter a vigorous shaking, the cocktail is strained into a coupe glass and garnished with a lemon peel and cherry. I promised to share the recipe so I’m happy to finally be posting it. I made these Apple Cider Sidecars a few weeks ago when I set my fall tablescape. Something that I disliked since forever is now in my like column! Who knows.Īll of that is sort of irrelevant, other than as a reminder to myself that it’s good to try new things. Maybe my confusion was due to their colors or the fact that they are aged in barrels. In the past, I often incorrectly clumped them in the same category. Bourbon is a whiskey made from distilled grains, while cognac is a specific type of brandy made from distilled grapes. I have learned that bourbon and cognac are totally different things. As a matter of fact, I started to appreciate bourbon after I created this Cranberry Bourbon Cocktail (which, along with this Cranberry Old Fashioned, is now my go-to drink during the holiday season.) It wasn’t until the past couple of years that I developed a taste for bourbon and cognac. 4 Apple Cider Sidecar Apple Cider Sidecar: Share and keep your files always updated between two different locations. In fact, you can make all the cuts you want in a single video and put the pieces together on a timeline however you want. You can even add tags to make searching even easier.Īs we’ve mentioned above, the program also includes a small video editor that will save you when you need it, and lets you complete necessary video edits beyond setting the start and end times. A professional capture toolĪll of these tools are grouped together on a common interface that lets you store and see image and video galleries. Slide reader: An integrated assistant geared toward commenting in real time Powerpoint presentations, while you talk and show your face (or whatever you want) via webcam. Plus, you can make the mouse cursor disappear from the screen, which is a must for some games. Among its features, you’ll find one that measures frames per second that displays in real time. Game capture: Similar to the standard capture, the game capturer is somewhat more of a “luxury” feature when it comes to detecting game windows. Aside from a webcam, you can use any compatible video capture device. Webcam capture: Although the sections are related, in this part you can make all the adjustments related to the recording of external devices. In terms of live captures and interaction with what happens on the screen, you can apply blog effects to partially hide certain parts of the screen, along with a small group of drawing tools to make all sorts of marks and sketches on the screen. This way, you’ll save time and effort spent on the post-production and can create the whole composition on the fly. For example, you can record what’s happening on the screen of your PC while in the corner, you record yourself with a webcam. In addition to being able to select a specific area, you can also overlay various capture sources at the same time. When you go into this feature, you’ll open up a dedicated toolbar to control various parameters of the recording. Video capture: Here’s the great thing about GOM Cam. Plus, the mouse itself has a magnet system that will automatically select a window or area of the screen when you get close to the edges. You can even see the coordinates on the screen for the area you’re marking with the mouse. Image capture: Although the most recent versions of Windows have their own integrated capture system, this program goes one step further, letting you manually select the area you want to capture. Let’s just look at the possibilities of each feature: Since you can leave the program running in the background and associate keyboard shortcuts to each one of its features, this Swiss army knife of a tool is always ready and waiting to be used. For everything mentioned above, it’s clear that this tool is focused around the capture and post-production, but not the live streaming of content through platforms like Twitch.Ī capture tool that brings everything togetherĪfter using GOM Cam for a good while now, we’ve come to the conclusion that it’s extremely convenient having various capture tools all together under one roof. In reality, it includes so many other advanced features like recording multimedia presentations, the possibility to make all different types of drawings and marks on the screen or an integrated task list, making it full of possibilities for the professional environment.īut that’s not all GOM Cam also includes its own video editor for making cuts and modifying video parameters. But it wouldn’t be fair to leave it at that. You could define GOM Cam as a mere tool for capturing images and videos taken from your PC, either capturing what you record with a webcam or directly recording what happens on the screen. No matter how many tools exist for smartphones, it’s still almost necessary to have a desktop software in order to take video captures with professional-looking post-production effects. Recording and sharing video content online is all the rage right now, and it reaches practically every aspect of our lives: from sharing your gaming habits by streaming gameplays on Twitch, to creating video tutorials on your YouTube channel, and even posting your own vlog in the form of Instagram stories.
